LABORATORY/LIFE+/Finance as Infrastructure for Autonomy

Finance as Infrastructure for Autonomy

I regard money primarily as a reserve of freedom to act. It can help me choose my work and environment, buy back time, reduce dependence on a single source of income, and invest in health, learning and my own projects.

FN.01Autonomy
The ability to refuse work or obligations that contradict my principles. Without a financial foundation, many decisions are shaped by someone else's constraints.
FN.02Time and attention
Money can buy back two particularly valuable resources: time and attention. A rouble spent well can free up hours for concentrated work.
FN.03Health and longevity
Assessments, medical care, recovery and useful equipment all require resources. Financial reserves form part of a long-term approach to health and longevity.
FN.04Development
Learning, research, experiments and tools for my own projects. I see this as investment in my ability to act, rather than investing simply to earn a percentage return.
FN.05Security
Reserves, protection against major risks and the ability to make decisions without relying on a single income stream. The point is a more resilient system, not wealth as an end in itself.
ST.01Day-to-day finances
Current income and expenses, and stable cash flow. The first task is predictability rather than optimisation.
ST.02A reserve
A cushion long enough to rearrange work and life without immediate pressure. This is a reserve of autonomy, not an investment portfolio.
ST.03Development
Money set aside for projects, research, education and health. It is used deliberately and according to rules, rather than taken indistinctly from a common pot.
ST.04The long horizon
Assets that serve goals extending across years or decades. The emphasis is on long-term infrastructure, not speculation.

I do not use income or wealth to measure a person's worth, or build my identity around earnings. I do not accept work that damages health and agency in exchange for an impressive figure. I also reject financial arrangements that require moral compromises. Related themes: decision filters, relationships, longevity.
