Adapt

Adapt becomes important when returning to the old pattern is no longer possible or worthwhile. I adjust workload, tools, pace and the range of tasks so that independence and meaningful activity can continue under changed circumstances.

·A limitation is a condition to work with, not a final verdict.
·Adapt aims to build a new workable way of living, rather than write someone off or pretend the old conditions still apply.
·Adapt is closely related to Care and Deep Care, but it emphasises active reconfiguration rather than maintenance alone.
·Review what cannot be done as before, what can be done differently and what might even improve.
·Reconfigure workload, tools, pace and surroundings: workspace, support, external memory and daily routines.
·Shift tasks towards activities in which the new constraints might be an advantage, or at least not an obstacle.
·A stable way of living within the new constraints, rather than repeated attempts to restore an unworkable old pattern.
·Continued meaningful activity and personal agency rather than a slide into passivity.
·Less constant resistance to the situation and less self-blame.
·Adapt must not become denial of genuine limitations or an attempt to continue the old Perform mode unchanged.
·Adapt must not be used to abandon Return when recovery of a function is genuinely possible.
